Joyce Banda: The Rise of Malawi's First Female President

Early Life and Activism

Joyce Hilda Banda was born in Zomba, Nyasaland (now Malawi) on April 12, 1950.

Her father was a bandmaster in the Malawi Police Service. Banda began her career as a secretary and first gained prominence during the reign of dictator Kamuzu Banda, her namesake but not a relative. She pursued higher education, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Early Childhood Education, a Master's in Gender Studies, and a Diploma in NGO Management.

In 2013, she received an honorary doctorate from Jeonju University.
