CHICO — In addition to honoring the life of Martin Luther King Jr., speakers at Chico’s MLK Day event focused on standing against injustice here in the community.

“We cannot wait for a perfect leader to come along and save us,” said speaker Nandi Crosby.

“Because history has shown us that it’s always just regular folks who do the work of change in this world.”

Keeping with the theme of taking action, Crosby further called for attendees to get involved in local politics.

“Show up at the school board meetings and city council sessions,” Crosby said.

“Advocate for fair housing policies that expand opportunities in your neighborhood.

Demand accountability when they ignore issues of racial injustice. If you have the ability, consider running for city council.”

Attendees cheered at Crosby’s comments, many standing and some sitting on the floor of the packed event.

Organizers began setting up chairs just outside the side doors of the banquet hall to help accommodate the large crowd.
